Traffic Violations
Help for Missouri Traffic Violations or License Suspension
Most moving violations, traffic citations, and motor vehicle-related offenses in Missouri are assigned a given number of points. If you accumulate too many points within a given period of time, your license will be suspended. At the Roberts Law Firm in St. Louis, our lawyers help Missouri drivers defend traffic tickets, avoid suspension of their licenses, and recover reinstatement or limited driving privileges if suspension is inevitable. Our trial attorneys have over 20 years of cumulative experience as prosecutors and public defenders, and Greg L. Roberts has served as a municipal judge. Contact one of our experienced defense lawyers for dependable advice about your particular situation.
Points against your license vary with the seriousness of the offense. For example, a municipal stop sign violation that does not result in an accident is worth 1 point, a state speeding violation is worth 3 points, and a first-time DWI/DUI is worth 8 points. Leaving an accident scene in violation of state law, repeat drunk driving, or felonies involving the use of a motor vehicle are each worth 12 points. Eight points within any 18-month period will result in a 30-day suspension. Twelve points within any 12-month period will result in a one-year suspension.
The best way to protect your driver's license — aside from keeping a perfectly clean driving record — is to fight citations in municipal court. As a former municipal court judge, defense attorney Greg L. Roberts and our former public defenders and former prosecutors know how to spot the weaknesses in the arresting officer's report, and can present your strongest defense against the traffic violation charged. In cases where the evidence is strong or where an additional citation will put you at risk of suspension, it is sometimes possible to negotiate a guilty plea to an alternative charge that carries fewer or even no points against your license.
We represent members of the general driving public as well as holders of commercial driver's licenses (CDL) charged with traffic violations or faced with license suspension proceedings in Greater St. Louis and all over Missouri.
